From underwear to coffee cups: 10 everyday objects reveal their hidden functions

We rarely pay our full attention to everyday objects, so we sometimes neglect one or another detail that characterizes them. And some of their properties and functions escape us as well. Below we reveal the secrets of 10 everyday objects and tell you what their functions are.

1) The “pocket” in the panties

The inner fabric layer of women’s panties is made of softer material. Although it is sewn on the sides, it usually stays open on one side, making it look like a small pocket. There is no seam at this level so as not to create an unpleasant feeling in the crotch.

2) The little hole in the smartphone

The small hole between the camera and the flash on the back of smartphones is a microphone that improves the quality of sound recordings and assists voice control.

4) silica gel

Silica gel is usually provided with new shoes, bags, or devices. These pouches are used to prevent moisture from entering. Most of the time you throw them away, but they still have so many possibilities to offer, for example, to dry a cell phone that has fallen in the water. Moreover, the mention “do not ingest” does not mean that it is a poison, but only serves to avoid confusion with food.

5) The lid of the Tic Tac box

You are probably familiar with this situation: you want to take a Tic Tac, but either none comes out of the box, or half does. But the manufacturers thought it over: turn the box over, hold it with one hand, open the lid with the other. The hollow on the inside of the lid is designed to accommodate exactly one Tic Tac.

6) The notches under the cups

And what are these notches on the bottom of the cups for? To put down a cigarette? To avoid a suction effect when the cup is hot? No! The notches have two advantages. On the one hand, the water can flow out through the notch when the cup is in the dishwasher in order to avoid small puddles that form on the cups. On the other hand, they allow the mug not to stick to the table if it gets a little wet, for example, if you have spilled something.

7) The ring at the neck

On the top of some plastic bottles that contain carbonated drinks as well as those that have crown caps, there is a small ring. It prevents the evaporation of carbon dioxide, for example when the bottle is shaken in the backpack during transport.

8) Different sides of the cotton

Such cotton can be used in two ways: the bumpy side is for applying makeup, while the smooth side is for removing makeup and cleansing the face.

9) The pompom on the hat

Originally, the pompom on the bonnet was not only a fashion accessory, but it had a very specific function: in the 18th century, French sailors wore beanies so as not to bump into the low ceiling of the deck when the sea was rough.

10) The cover flaps

To be honest, it’s pretty obvious, but it’s also a neat idea, which is why it’s mentioned here: The flaps on the front and back of some books serve not only to convey information about the content and the author but also to serve as bookmarks. And to prevent them from warping too much, you take the front flap for the first half of the book and the back flap for the second part. Unfortunately, this does not work with eBooks.

We are all familiar with the items listed here. But it is surprising how much we do not know their functions, even if we use them often. At least you’ll know how to use these ten items from now on.
